Dr. Lanier Holt, associate professor in the School of Communication within the College of Arts and Sciences, is the inaugural JPMorgan Chase Faculty Fellow. This position, created with the generous support of JPMorgan Chase, aligns with ODI's mission to connect its scholars to opportunities that match their educational and career aspirations. Dr. Holt will design and implement select post-baccalaureate and career development programs, services and resources for ODI scholars.

Prior to joining ODI, Dr. Holt founded the Holt Official Watch List program in 2014 through which he has mentored almost 30 students from underrepresented groups to prestigious post-graduate programs. Beyond mentoring, Dr. Holt is an award-winning researcher, most recently earning Top Paper for 2020 honors in a flagship social psychology journal for his work examining why some support the Black Lives Matter Movement while others reject it. He is also an award-winning teacher, earning both the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award and Distinguished Teaching Award, the highest teaching honors conferred to faculty at the university. Dr. Holt has been on faculty at Ohio State since 2013.

Laney Graduate School – Summer Opportunity for Academic Research

The LGS-SOAR (Summer Opportunity for Academic Research) (June 1-August 6) partners with the Emory College SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) Program and will host potential LGS students (current NON-Emory Undergraduate scholars) who want to explore, experience, and conduct full-time independent and mentored research for the summer.

The program is unique in that all scholars will be from historically underrepresented ethnic and racial backgrounds in graduate education or who participated in NIH-RISE, NIH-IMSD, Mellon Mays, McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, OR who are first-generation college scholars who participated in Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunities Centers, or similar programs. Additionally, financial support will be provided by either LGS or the home institution of the student. Housing is also included. All LGS-SOAR students will adhere to any and all COVID protocols instilled by the university. All administrative activities (besides training for your specific research group) will be handled by LGS-SOAR/SURE.

Southern Education Leadership Initiative Fellowship Application

SELI Eligibility and Other Requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 20-35 years old.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a four-year college or graduate level program.
  • Must have completed 60 credit hours (equivalent of junior status & above in undergraduate program) or be currently enrolled in a masters, doctoral, or professional program at a college or university. No minimum GPA is required.
  • All majors are accepted but you must have demonstrated an interest in education equity and/or social justice.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, writing, and critical thinking skills, with flexibility to respond well to diverse people, settings, and tasks.
  • Deadline for the submission of a complete application is March 1, 2021, 5pm ET. Please see the following pages for more details on required materials and directions on how to submit them. Fellows must attend in full the Orientation and Closing Meeting and be physically present at their placement site office during work hours for the duration of the program.

Mass General Hospital Summer Research Trainee Program

Each summer, twenty students are selected from a nationwide competition to join SRTP. Each student is assigned to a specific MGH laboratory, clinical site, health policy, or health services research area where they undertake an original research project under the mentorship and guidance of a Mass General Hospital (MGH) investigator. Assignments are carefully considered and are made with the student's research and career interests in mind. In addition to this unique research experience, students will gain knowledge through weekly seminars at MGH, attend career development workshops and networking events, and have opportunities for clinical shadowing.

Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Summer Institute

Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Summer Institute: June 2 - July 2, 2021

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation have created the Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Summer Institute to encourage minority students and others with an interest in African-American, African and African Diasporan Studies to pursue PhDs in the humanities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's institute will be held entirely online.

The program, which is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, offers a six-week session for ten rising seniors (juniors in spring 2021, entering their senior year in fall 2021, graduating in 2022.)

Males and students from HBCUs are encouraged to apply.
