YSP offers summer residential overnight programs introducing Scholars to the Ohio State Columbus campus. While on campus, Scholars meet faculty and staff, campus administrators, and current Young Scholars who promote student success and retention. Scholars are also given opportunities to explore various college majors and careers while being fully exposed to the Columbus community.
The Young Scholars Program (YSP) Samuel DuBois Cook Summer Academy provides academic enrichment and comprehensive support services for pre-collegiate students participating in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion Young Scholars Program. This program is designed to assist rising high school senior pre-collegiate Young Scholars with reaching their full potential and achieving their academic goals through personal, academic, and leadership development.
The YSP ASPIRE program is a week-long residential program for rising high school juniors. ASPIRE leverages established partnerships between The Ohio State University, the Young Scholars Program, and community stakeholders to provide students with academic and experience-based learning in their selected career pathway. The program experience increases students' career path knowledge and aids in building their career capital for future success.
The 4-day Leadership and Wellness Summit is designed to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become resilient, empathetic leaders who contribute positively to their local and school communities. Through a holistic approach, the summit aims to foster personal growth, strengthen interpersonal relationships, and cultivate a culture of inclusivity and well-being, ultimately equipping Scholars with the tools they need to thrive academically and personally as they take on leadership roles within their everyday lives.
Job Summary
Peer Success Leaders are responsible for fulfilling the mission of the Young Scholars Program, which is to encourage and prepare Young Scholar participants for post-secondary education. Peer Success Leaders must have a positive attitude, genuine interest in inspiring high school students for success, respect for and interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, professionalism, and a desire to promote higher education.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Build and maintain rapport with students across multiple digital platforms
- Relay student-related issues and concerns to the Program Manager
- Establish and maintain virtual communication with YSP participants and staff
- Design and facilitate small and large group college preparatory workshops working with high school students and other collegiate Peer Success Leaders
- Conduct peer counseling and college readiness advising
- Assist with YSP Summer Academy program design and implementation
- Serve as a teacher assistant to summer program course instructors
- Promote the safety of Scholars and the security of their belongings through instruction, observation, correction and cooperation of all program participants
- Assist with distribution, completion and collection of forms and materials including attendance forms and incident reports
- Model behavior that results in establishing and maintaining positive, respectful mentor relationships with students
- Maintain active involvement in ALL project activities for the duration of summer program
- Monitor student on-line behavior during chat sessions
Requirements
- Excellent knowledge of The Ohio State University academic units and social resources
- One year previous experience working with pre-college students (summer camps, tutoring, etc.)
- Ability to work effectively with youth from diverse communities and provide relatable experiences
- Experience and/or knowledge working in teams or groups in a leadership capacity
- Excellent communication skills (speaking, writing, listening)
- Ability to establish priorities and work with some level of independence
- Graduate or undergraduate students with at least two semesters (by end of SP22) of experience at The Ohio State University-Columbus campus
- In good academic standing in accordance with university guidelines
- Extracurricular involvement in campus organizations
- Summer Program applicants must not be enrolled in residential summer classes or hold any other positions of employment for the duration of summer employment
- Minimum 2.6 cumulative grade point average
Pay
$15-16/hour, 45 hours per week (distributed according to the university pay cycle)
