The LSAMP STEM Early Arrival Program is a five-day program that introduces incoming underrepresented minority students to opportunities in The Ohio State University STEM community. If you are accepted into the LSAMP program, you will be expected to participate in the STEM Early Arrival Program, which will take place during the week before fall semester classes begin. You will also be expected to participate in programming activities throughout the year.

Programming for the LSAMP STEM Early Arrival Program

The Early Arrival Program will include classes such as:

Problem Solving in STEM
This course is instructed by faculty from the Department of Mathematics. It is a mathematics for STEM applications course. It will help students succeed in their STEM disciplines and encourage them to learn math by providing a better understanding of why they learn the various skill sets in math. In addition to interactions with the instructor, the course uses the ALEKS online program, a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system that uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and does not know. The program then instructs students on the topics they are most ready to learn. This course is designed to benefit all participants, regardless of their previous math placement, scores or experiences.

STEM Study Skills
This class is designed to help students develop study strategies that will help them succeed in their STEM courses. Some of the primary topics covered will be time management, note-taking strategies, and reading strategies. While the course will primarily focus on how to prepare for STEM courses, students will learn skills and strategies that they will be able to use in all their courses.
