YSP Success Coaches

YSP grads in cap and gown in the Ohio Union

Success Coaches are full-time professional staff members who provide holistic retention counseling to help scholars transition from high school to college. Success Coaches meet with scholars twice per semester. Comprehensive college success counseling meetings focus on cognitive and non-cognitive factors impacting student persistence, including personal wellness, social adjustment and integration, financial aid, student relationships, family support, student safety, time management, major application, exploration, and degree attainment. Success Coaches monitor student academic progress and work with scholars to ensure their personal and career goals align with their academic strengths.

What’s the difference between my Success Coach and my Academic Advisor?

  • YSP Success Coaching aims to increase retention and promote academic success for academically talented, first-generation students from Ohio's nine largest urban school districts. YSP accomplishes this goal by offering programs and services that are comprehensive, holistic, proactive and culturally relevant to the students we serve.
  • YSP Coaches use an intrusive advising approach that requires all enrolled undergraduate scholars to meet virtually or in person at least twice per semester.
  • In addition to discussing scholars' academic progress, YSP Success Coaches discuss non-academic factors that support and impede student retention and completion.
  • YSP Success Coaches monitor scholars' academic progress via Progress Reports and End of Semester Reviews.
