A pop culture educator who spent more than 15 years teaching at The Ohio State University has begun a new scholarship fund for ODI-affiliated students.

Professor Frederick Aldama--a 2022 inductee into the ODI Hall of Fame--made a generous donation to kickstart the scholarship fund in his name. An educator known in the comic book world as Professor Latinx, Aldama was inspired to become a teacher by his mother, Charlotte, who defied state law by teaching migrant children in Spanish and English in a poor, rural school district in California during the 1970s.

The Olayiwola and Onyejekwe families are so thankful. 

How do you repay someone for their immeasurable guidance? This was the question Brukie Kassa grappled with after graduating from The Ohio State University last year. Rather than repay, she chose to pay forward, starting an ODI educational fund to honor her mentor, Chaka Wilson.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " Honoring the words of Dr. King, on January 15, 2024, Jermain L. Pettis '04 announced the launch of The Jermain L. Pettis Scholarship Fund at The Ohio State University.

In his LinkedIn post announcing the scholarship, Pettis said, “The power to enact meaningful change lies at the intersection of education and opportunity.”
