Forging Freedom: AfroLatinAmerican Independence Movements, is a one-day symposium on October 1 that highlights AfroLatin American leaders of Independence of the 18th and 19th centuries. This is put on by Maria Hammack from the Department of History and Leila Vera from CLAS. 

They’ll have an exciting lineup of scholars participating including the amazing Erika Edwards (author of Hiding in Plain Sight) and Alan Malfavon (expert on AfroMexican Revolutionaries) --visiting us from 

Texas and California respectively-- who will share their work and expertise with us. 

Symposium's Schedule:

9:30 a.m. Welcome remarks

9:45 a.m. Black Latin American leaders in Mexico and Argentina, with Dr. Alan Malfavon and Dr. Erika Edwards, moderated by Dr. María Hammack

11:30 a.m. Afro-Brazilian Freedom Fighters in Capoeira Music, with Julio Beltrán

12:00 p.m. FREE Lunch (registration required)

1:00 p.m. Freedom Fighters in Brazil and the Caribbean, with Dr. Zachary Morgan and Dr. Shavagne  Scott, moderated by Dr. TBA

2:45 p.m. Roundtable: How to do Archival Research on Black Freedom in Latin America with Dr. Alan Malfavon, Dr. Erika Edwards, Dr. Zachary Morgan, moderated by Dr. Shavagne Scott
