Upward Bound students attend leadership program
The Ohio State University Trio Upward Bound program, in partnership with Columbus, Ohio-based “Leadership At Its Best” held its kickoff Junior Executive Development (JED) leadership program on Saturday, October 20, 2018. President and CEO of Leadership At Its Best, Dr. Carter D Womack, led the program.
The Junior Executive Development leadership model focuses on the development of “soft skills” needed by students to become successful in school or on the job. In addition, the JED prepares students to become leaders in their school, develop skills to become peer-to-peer counselors as well as develop skills that enable them to be of service to their community. The JED program also includes a career awareness component that enables students to engage in career exploration in corporate, community-based and government organizations. Moving forward, Trio Upward Bound students will be involved in JED programming activities during Saturday Academy sessions for the remainder of the 2018-19 academic year.
The mission of The Ohio State University Trio Upward Bound Program is to provide academic and emotional support to first generation and/or low-income students that enables them to successfully graduate from high school and enroll in post-secondary education. Housed within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and managed by Dr. Laura Commodore, the program serves 60 students from the Columbus, Ohio area. Beyond the opportunity for students to participate in a positive, motivating, college-focused environment, members of The Ohio State University Trio Upward Bound Program receive intensive year-round academic preparation, tutoring services, and test preparation for the ACT and SAT. Further, students participate in college/cultural tours, personal/career development activities, and workshops.
