Upward Bound is now accepting employment applications for the following Summer 2017 Academic Institute positions:

  • Summer Academic Specialist
  • Summer Tutor Counselor

Academic Specialists

Qualifications and Responsibilities
All Academic Specialists are expected to provide instruction that prepares students for success in the upcoming academic year and the ACT examination. Our students need focused support and attention in math, science, and English for regular academic progress but especially for standardized testing. 

Each Specialist is expected to provide a curriculum and be proficient (licensure and experience preferred) in their subject area to teach grades 9-11.

Science

  • 9th grade/10th grade: Physical Science/Biology

  • 11th grade: Chemistry and Intro A&P

Math

  • 9th grade/10th grade: Algebra/Geometry

  • 11th grade: Algebra II and Pre-Calculus

English/Writing Intensive

  • 9th thru 11th grade: Skills Development Writing

  • Reading comprehension, essay writing, library resources, oral presentation

Positions Open

  • 1 Instructor for all levels of Math

  • 1 Instructor for all levels of Science

  • 1 Instructor for English/Writing

Dates / Hours

  • Orientation: June 7, 2017, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

  • Work dates: June 12 - July 14, 2017 /  Monday - Friday (Closed July 4th)

  • Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Includes planning & preparation time)

  • Pay: $33/hour

Tutor Counselors

Qualifications and Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Academic Counselor and the general supervision of the Director of the Upward Bound Program, Tutor Counselors are responsible for students, and activities taking place in the residence hall, classrooms, and on campus. He / She will serve as a resource and mentor and assumes administrative responsibility in the residence hall for Upward Bound students. Tutor Counselors are responsible for monitoring and documenting student conduct in and out of the classroom. These positions will be occupied by college students with a minimum Sophomore Status.

  • Report directly to Academic Counselor

  • Lead College Exploration Workshop daily or assists with Senior Seminar

  • Relay student-related issues and concerns first to the Lead Tutor Counselor.

  • Clarify and implement Upward Bound rules, policies and procedures

  • Establish and maintain communication with Upward Bound participants and staff living within the residence hall through individual contact, meetings, discussion and personal interactions

  • Model behavior that result in establishing and maintaining positive, respectful mentor relationships with students

  • Maintain active involvement in ALL project activities for the duration of Summer Institute

  • Attend classes with students to ensure good behavior and assist instructors

  • Conduct, when necessary, student individual meetings with Administrative staff

  • Provide students with tutorial services and academic preparation

  • Attend weekly staff meetings

  • Chaperone students on all Upward Bound events and activities

  • Must be able to travel out of town with the program during Upward Bound events

  • Complete reports in a proper and timely fashion, including but not limited to planning reports, incident reports, room inventories, check in & check out forms, meal duty form, bed check form and study table form

  • Maintain contact with Academic Specialists in regard to class attendance, academic issues, and general concerns for students

  • Provide overnight monitoring and crisis management (Residential initiative only)

  • Encourage and inspire students to be academically committed

Dates / Hours
The Tutor Counselor positions run from June 12 - July 20, 2017 and are divided into three initiatives: Non-residential, residential, and traveling classroom

Non-Residential

  • Orientation: June 7, 2017

  • Work Dates: June 12 - July 7, 2017

  • Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

  • Pay: $13/hour

 Residential

  • Work Dates: July 9 - July 15, 2017

    • July 9: move in to residence hall
    • July 9: TC meeting and prepare for student move-in
    • July 15: Students move-out
    • July 4: Holiday Observance (Program not in session)
  • $13/hour

Traveling Classroom

  • Work Dates: July 17 - 20, 2017

  • Must be able to travel out of state with the program staff and participants for the summer college tour
  • Travel expenses, including room and board, are covered for program activities only

  • July 15: TCs move out of the residence halls

Volunteers

Qualifications and Responsibilities

  • Must have completed at least one year of college
  • Assist with monitoring student's conduct in the classrooms and residence halls
  • Must be able to effectively work and communicate with low-income high school age students
  • Provide tutoring in any academic subject to students during designated study hours
  • Must be able to demonstrate competence in the areas of personal and academic counseling
  • Assist in educational and recreational activities
  • Encourage and inspire students to be academically committed
  • Assist Upward Bound staff in projects as assigned
  • Remaining open to students for mentoring purposes and give insight to their situation in an optimistic, mature fashion
  • Assist Upward Bound staff in projects as needed
