“Preparing Buckeyes to be students of the world.”
This year, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will offer the following education abroad experience:
Higher Education in Brazil: Access, Equity, and Opportunity
Led by Drs. James L. Moore III and Robert A. Bennett III, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the College of Education and Human Ecology have collaborated to offer Higher Education in Brazil: Access, Equity, and Opportunity. It is an education abroad experience for Spring Break 2017 (Thursday, March 9 – Sunday, March 19, 2017) to the Bahia region of Brazil. This course (1-credit hour) will expose Ohio State students to educational access and equity challenges in Brazil commonly experienced by low-income and first-generation college students enrolled in American universities and colleges. More specifically, this education abroad experience will help student participants gain a better understanding of the role of higher education in Brazil and the educational needs of low-income and first generation students, particularly Afro-Brazilians. Students will also acquire greater understanding of how race, socioeconomic status, and gender impacts educational and social opportunities for Afro-Brazilian youth. The education abroad experience will include discussions with university faculty and visits to elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions and historical and cultural sites in Brazil.
Apply for an ODI
Education Abroad Scholarship
In 2006, Dr. Mac Stewart, Vice Provost for the then Office of Minority Affairs, created the World Service Program to provide education abroad scholarship opportunities to underrepresented students. Today, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion continues that support in the form of ODI’s Education Abroad Scholarships, which offer the opportunity to acquire international experiences available to a diverse range of students.
For the 2016-2017 academic year, the Education Abroad Scholarships will grant awards between $500 and $1,500 to students who are traveling abroad during Spring 2017, Summer 2017, and Autumn 2017.
To be considered for a scholarship, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students must apply to an Ohio State University sponsored program (Including Higher Education in Brazil: Access, Equity, and Opportunity) and be in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.0. Special consideration will be given to ODI Scholars and students who are going abroad for the first time.
Applications submitted that do not meet the stated criteria will not be considered.
The application deadline was Monday, January 16, 2017 at 5 p.m.
