My Reflections on the MSP Alternative Spring Break Trip to Chicago

By Devon Stith

My experience on the 2020 MSP Alternative Spring Break was absolutely amazing. I was a participant in last year's alternative spring break trip to D.C. and had a great time, so I honestly came in with high expectations but was not disappointed. Through the various locations we visited and supported through our service, we were able to get a firsthand look at what fighting housing insecurity and homelessness looks like from the grassroots level all the way up through the city, state, and federal government. The way that the trip was constructed really allowed us as students to fully immerse our minds into the depths of this issue. The experience of being able to talk to people who have or currently are experiencing homelessness, contrasted with the perceived barriers shared with us by policymakers, was more eye-opening than anything else could have been. On top of all of this great service learning, we were also given the opportunity to explore and learn more about the city of Chicago. Overall, the trip was an amazing experience, and I am more than excited to see what MSP will have lined up for next year!
