STEM EARLY ARRIVAL PROGRAM h

In summer 2021, 19 first-year students took part in a five- day (August 16-20) virtual STEM Early Arrival Program.

Most of the participants were Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering and Animal Science majors. Scholars got the opportunity to participate in workshops focused on helping them build STEM study skills and problem solving skills and lunch-and-learns focused on specific topics such as microaggressions, understanding uniqueness and strengths, and thriving in the first year.

SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE h

In summer 2021, six scholars engaged in a 10-week undergraduate research experience supervised by faculty research mentors. The scholars were mostly Biomedical Science and Neuroscience majors. In addition to their research projects, scholars engaged in a professional development series. The experience culminated with scholars presenting research findings at the 2021 Consortium of Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences at Ohio State on July 29, 2021.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT h

LSAMP scholars engaged in professional development activities to meet program participation requirements. A few of the professional development events organized this fall for scholars included a CliftonStrength Assessment Workshop, to help students identify and leverage strengths associated with their personality, and a GRE/MCAT preparation session, where scholars were introduced to different study techniques, ways to acquire exam prep materials, and various test taking strategies.

ALUMNI NETWORKING DINNER h

The LSAMP Alumni Networking Dinner held on Friday, November 19, 2021, was a way for current scholars to interact with corporate sponsors and LSAMP alumni as well as their colleagues over dinner. It was a networking event to introduce current scholars to corporate sponsors and to motivate scholars with the success stories of Ohio State LSAMP Alumni. Twelve LSAMP scholars attended this event. We also had four alumni panelist and Aptiv, one of our corporate sponsors, in attendance.

THRIVING DURING EXAMS h

This end of semester event held on Thursday, December 9, 2021, provided 30 scholars with some study snacks and an examination tip sheet to help them prepare for finals. Scholars were encouraged to prepare all study materials ahead of exams and get rest in between exams.

SUCCESS COACHING h

All LSAMP scholars are required to attend success coaching appointments with the program coordinator, Abby Kincaid, each semester to discuss their academic progress throughout the semester as well as concerns or issues hindering that progress. We currently serve 80 LSAMP scholars.

FACULTY MENTORING h

Faculty Mentoring is an initiative to provide mentorship to first- and second-year scholars to promote and foster scholars' academic and social integration into the university, colleges, and STEM departments. Nineteen second-year scholars received mentorship this fall. First-year scholars will be assigned faculty mentors in the spring of 2022.
