Ohio LSAMP Holds Inaugural Events

Ohio LSAMP Governing Board Meeting

The Ohio LSAMP Alliance officially kicked off on March 6, 2014, beginning with the meeting between the Governing Board and Ohio State Interim President Joseph Alutto. The Governing Board consists of the provosts of each of the 11 partner institutions. Dr. Alutto, Principal Investigator for the Ohio LSAMP Alliance, welcomed members of the Governing Board and expressed enthusiasm for providing underrepresented students in STEM with programming to assure their success, particularly during their freshmen and sophomore years. Dr. Barbara Fink, Alliance Director, briefly outlined the alliance-wide activities, as well as LSAMP programs offered at each partner institution. Dr. Valerie Lee, Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (and Vice President for Outreach and Engagement) provided some background on the LSAMP grant proposal and the support for LSAMP that is available through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. A. James Hicks, Senior Program Director for the LSAMP Program at the National Science Foundation, was present to describe the LSAMP program, its history, and its opportunities.

Members of The Ohio LSAMP Alliance Governing Board then attended the President and Provost's Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series presentation by Dr. Mae Jemison.

Ohio LSAMP Inaugural Reception

The Ohio Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Alliance's lead institution, The Ohio State University, hosted the inaugural reception for their first cohort of 39 scholars on Friday, February 28th in the MLK Jr. Lounge of Hale Hall on Ohio State's campus. During the event, Dr. Valerie Lee, Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Barbara Fink, Ohio LSAMP Director, and Dr. Kari L. Jordan, Ohio LSAMP Program Coordinator, gave the scholars words of inspiration and encouragement. The scholars are a diverse group of first and second year African American, Native American, and Hispanic/Latino(a) students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The students played a STEM Telestrations game and watched a video where they learned about other LSAMP programs across the country and how they are part of a large alliance.
