Vesper Choir visits ODI
In the 1940s, the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff Vesper Choir was formed to present music for the campus Sunday even Vespers services. Since then, the choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael Bates and assisted by Mr. Andee Book, has been garnering accolades across the nation and the world. The choir has performed at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., singing Handel’s Messiah, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, as well as spirituals, hymns, and Motown selections.
On Monday, March 21, 2016, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion was fortunate to have 57 members of the Vesper Choir perform in Hale Hall through a Buckeye connection: Ms. Joyce Vaughan, received her master’s in counselor education from The Ohio State University as well as being employed there as a Student Affairs Performance Consultant and Director of African American Student Services. The nearly one-hour performance included Handel’s Messiah, spirituals, with an upbeat finish of Motown tunes.
