2016 Office of Diversity and Inclusion
Sharon L. Davies, vice provost for Diversity and Inclusion and chief diversity officer, welcomed over a 75 faculty, staff and students to the 4th Annual ODI Honors Reception on Monday, April 18, 2016. This event celebrates the excellence and achievements of ODI students and staff, including Individual honorees recognized by ODI units who demonstrated excellence in academics, service, resiliency, leadership and promotion of diversity:
ACCESS Collaborative: Janel Young
Hale Center: Dyamond Maree Humphrey
LSMAP: Natalie Dalea
ODI Scholars: Nima Dahir
Upward Bound: Dina Ballard
Women’s Place: Mary Juhas
YSP: Melissa Beers
Marissa Weatherly and Nii Armah Hammond – two of the 17 students who travelled over Spring Break for ODI’s Higher Education in Brazil – then took the stage to describe their experience of travelling abroad. The Brazil program allowed the students to experience the Brazilian culture and also to acquire an understanding of how race, socioeconomic status, and gender impact educational opportunities for Afro-Brazilian youth. And, both students agreed, the program also brought 17 individuals together as a family over the course of the trip.
The reception came to a close with the presentation of this year’s ODI Distinguished Staff Awards, which were presented to Stephanie Clemons Thompson, Coordinator for Academic Enrichment Initiatives, Morrill Scholars Program, and Armada Henderson, Tutoring program manager for ODI Scholars Program.
A special thank you to the Planning Committee: Robert Decatur, Stephanie Dunkel, Yolanda Slade, and Greg Williams.
