MSP staff member honored for commitment to first-year Buckeyes

During the 2024 Focusing on the First Year Conference, hosted by the Office of Student Academic Excellence, MSP Program Coordinator Marcellis Turnage received the Outstanding First Year Advocate Award. This award is given to honor individuals who have demonstrated a passion for helping students make the most of their first year, have fostered personal connections with or among first-year students, have implemented policies that helped make first-year student success possible and have served as a resource to new students.

Said one nominator: “Marcellis is very thorough and thoughtful in the way that he engages with students individually. He seems to always find a point of commonality to help students feel more comfortable. He can relate to the roommate struggles, the first time a student may fail an exam, the difficulty of finding and maintaining good friendships, being homesick, relationship struggles, navigating financial aid, the freshman 15, and the ever common “They broke up with me.”

When asked about the honor, Marcellis said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our first-year scholars and am very appreciative for the recognition."

Congratulations, Marcellis!
