LSS student selected for prestigious Congressional Internship Program

Brandon Hernandez, a scholar in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion's MESA Leadership Institute has been accepted to the Spring 2021 Congressional Internship Program (CIP) sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.

“This is Brandon's second year serving as a mentor in our newly-established MESA programming, which includes an early arrival program and leadership institute. It's great to see Brandon take the initiative, apply for this opportunity, and secure acceptance into the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Spring 2021 Congressional Internship Program,” said Michael Bustamante, Program Coordinator for Latinx Student Success.

One of 19 finalists, Brandon will intern remotely in a congressional office and receive leadership training from CHCI during the twelve-week internship program.

Brandon stated, “I felt that this program can offer me a unique experience that will help me gain important political tenure while also having some cultural fulfillment. What interests me the most about this program was its extensive network with various Latino political figures and important political organizations.”

Interns will explore public policy through work experience from a congressional office, develop and strengthen your leadership skills, learn more about policy making, the political process, and meet key Latino leaders who are making a difference across the country.

Other the next several months, Brandon will begin the placement process with congressional offices including interviews. During his internship, Brandon hopes to work on meaningful legislation that can help others and combat injustices and become better equipped in understanding the mechanisms involved within the political process and be more comfortable navigating issues regarding policy and legislation.
