Latinx Student Success awarded grant funds to update space

Latinx Student Success will be creating a new lounge area for community building, student interaction and creativity, and collaboration thanks to a new matching grant from the university's Integrated Physical Planning Liaison Group (IPPLG). IPPLG will fund up to $10,503 with a one for one match from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI).

Michael Bustamante, Program Coordinator for LSS, dreamed of transforming the current LSS office space on the second floor of Hale Hall into a comfy lounge more welcoming to students. “From a revamped MESA: Early Arrival Program and Leadership Institute to a monthly conversation series, Conversaciónes con Café, LSS has, in just a few short years, evolved as a student support unit. I thought it fitting that Hale Hall 200 also evolve, an evolution of the current office environment to a space that reflects and supports the individuals who make LSS all it is – the students,” said Michael Bustamante.

Bustamante's vison took shape through discussions with Hannah Higgins, a project manager in Planning, Architecture and Real Estate. The pair came up with a final design for a refurbished space with just the right touches where students can study, socialize and meet. Funds will be used to create new seating areas and help to define the space.

The new lounge for Latinx Student Success (LSS) is the next step forward for an ODI program established in 2016 to address the needs, concerns, and priorities of the Latinx student community at The Ohio State University. The mission of LSS is to raise the visibility of Latinx groups on campus and coordinate programming cultivating Latinx communities for academic, social, cultural, and professional support.

The awarded grant from IPPLG is a matching grant. IPPLG will fund up to $10,503 with a one for one match from ODI. “The new LSS space and programming not only empowers Latinx students to build a community among their peers, but by strengthening their engagement with ODI, LSS students also benefit from a host of welcoming staff and opportunities across our organization. This space makes a valuable contribution toward ODI's mission of promoting inclusive excellence at Ohio State,” stated Yolanda Zepeda, assistant vice provost for Diversity and Inclusion.
