The LASER Undergraduate and Graduate Mentors will be expected to work with their high school or college mentees at all levels, working on preparation for entrance exams; establishing and following application timelines; assisting with students on their writing samples and statements of purpose; and directing students to academic scholarships and other resources.

The goals for Undergraduate Mentors working with High School Mentees:

  • To prepare LASER High School Scholars for successful entrance into The Ohio State University
  • To work intensively on mastering college entrance exams
  • To guide LASER High School Scholars through all aspects of the college application process
  • To develop a broad understanding of the college experience and its opportunities

The LASER Undergraduate Mentor will:

  • Mentor a maximum of two LASER High School Scholars and meet each Scholar for 1-2 hours a week to work primarily on areas of college preparedness
  • Implement a curriculum with goals set for the respective academic year: grades 9-12
  • Attend Mentor Training Session I
  • Study the following Mentor Training Session II Video:

 The goals for LASER Graduate Mentors working with Undergraduate Mentees:

  • To prepare LASER Mentees for successful entrance into graduate and professional school
  • To work intensively on mastering GRE/LSAT/MCAT entrance exams
  • To guide LASER Mentees through the graduate school application process
  • To work on networking and building a portfolio, including securing letters of recommendation
  • To develop a broad understanding of the graduate and professional school experience and its opportunities

The LASER Graduate Mentor will:

  • Mentor LASER Undergraduate Mentees and meet each Scholar for 1-2 hours a week to work primarily on areas of college preparedness
  • Implement a curriculum with goals set for the respective academic year: freshman through senior

Mentors and mentees will meet in Ohio State's Hale Hall or on their respective university campus (Ohio State, Ohio Wesleyan or Otterbein) or public location close to a partner high school. Supplies include: Classroom space, dry erase board, desk, printer, scanner, and exam preparation materials.
