Professor Aldama wins Eisner award

Professor Frederick Aldama, LASER Program Director, has been awarded a 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award in the category of Best Academic/Scholarly Work for his book, Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics.

The Eisner Awards, named for comics creator and graphic novelist Will Eisner, are handed out each year in over two dozen categories and Comic-Con International: San Diego and are sometimes referred to as the comics industry’s Oscars.

Aldama’s book digs into the DC and Marvel comic book archives to tell the untold story of the significant presence of Latinx superheroes in the shaping of comic book storyworlds, including today’s film, TV, webisodes, and animation. Along the way, Aldama explores how artists and writers geometrize stories to make new the perception, thought, and feeling of their readers.

When asked about receiving this award, Aldama said, “I was ‘dear-in-headlamp’ surprised! This has to be the biggest honor of my life!”

Congratulations, Professor Aldama!
