About the Harry S. Truman Scholarship

What is the Truman Scholarship?

  • The Harry S. Truman Scholarship recognizes outstanding students with a demonstrated commitment to public service. Students must be pursuing a career in public service.
  • 50-60 awards are given nationally to current juniors. The scholarship contributes up to $30,000 towards graduate education in public service fields, as well as providing leadership and internship opportunities to scholars.

How does the Truman define public service?

The Truman defines public service as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, non-governmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service-oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • U.S. citizens or nationals.
  • Juniors (third year of college enrollment).
  • Students planning to attend graduate or professional school. Must be in the top 25% of their class.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in public service and pursuing a career within the public sector.

What are the selection criteria?

  • Extensive record of campus and community service.
  • Commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit and advocacy sectors.
  • Excellent communication skills and a high probability of becoming a “change agent” in one's field.
  • Strong academic record with likely acceptance by a first-rate graduate school.

How do I apply?

  • Students must apply to OSU for the university's nomination. Each institution may nominate up to 4 applicants. The Undergraduate Fellowship Office coordinates the nomination and application process.
  • Applications will be due to OSU on November 17th. The nominees will be selected and will be forwarded on to the national competition in Feb. 2021.The online application consists of the following:
    • Application form, including education, coursework, activities, honors & awards, and several essays:
      • Leadership Experience
      • Public Service Experience
      • Graduate School and Career Plans
      • Personal Information
      • Policy Proposal
    • Official Transcripts from ALL institutions attended
    • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • You must be registered in the online system in order to access the application.

  • The Undergraduate Fellowship Office can provide assistance with feedback on essays, selecting writers for letters of recommendation, and getting started on the application path. Please email us at fellowships@osu.edu to set up an appointment.
  • Faculty members are essential in providing feedback on the policy proposal.
