ODI Scholars Represent at the Annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum
On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, The Ohio State University Undergraduate Research Office, the University Honors & Scholars Center, and the Office of Research held the 19thAnnual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. With around 700 undergraduates attending, the Denman Forum, which gives undergraduate students a platform for presenting their research, is one the largest such events in the country.
Included within those 700 undergraduates were 72 Office of Diversity and Inclusion Scholars who had their abstracts evaluated by a committee and selected to present a poster at the Denman Forum. When judging was finished, eight Office of Diversity and Inclusion Scholars had won awards. Two ODI Scholars placed first within their areas: in Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Anne Kim, who is majoring Chemistry, presented on “Cytotoxicity Studies to Characterize Self-Assembling Amphiphiles for Targeted Cancer Drug Delivery”; in Health Professions – Lab/Cellular, Ryan Reyes, who is majoring in Biomedical Engineering, presented on “miR-23a: A Key Metabolic Regulator in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.” Three ODI Scholars placed second within their areas: Robert Battista (major: Chemical Engineering); Anna Dorfi (major: Chemical Engineering); and Anna Vigil (major: Nursing). An additional three ODI Scholars came in third place: Tomas Moren-Vasquez (major: Economics, Neuroscience, Psychology); Thara Nagarajan (major: Anthropological Sciences); and Christina Zerda (major: Geological Sciences).
All of the ODI Scholars who placed in their categories in the Denman Forum received scholarships from the Morrill Scholars Program. One of the premier merit-based scholarships in the United States, the ODI Morrill Scholars Program rewards academically exceptional students who are actively engaged in diversity-based leadership and service activities and eager to serve as student ambassadors and champions of academic excellence and diversity.
