Over 200 graduate and professional students, faculty and staff attended the 46th Annual Graduate and Professional Student Orientation and Networking Reception on August 24, 2017. Students listened to Scott Herness, PhD, Interim Dean and Vice Provost for Graduate Studies, who stated that they have the chance to study something they are passionate about; Kathy Seward, Esquire, Associate Dean for Admissions in the Moritz College of Law, wanted students to answer the question, “How can you leave this institution a better place for those who follow?”

The keynote speaker was Simone Drake, PhD, an Associate Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of African American and African Studies. She asked students to think about where their lives can go from here and to stay balanced. After Dr. Drake spoke, a student panel comprised of current graduate and professional students and moderated by Robert Bennett III, PhD, offered advice on how to navigate graduate school: don’t struggle alone - ask for help; reach out to older students for advice; build relationships with other students and faculty; and get out of your comfort zone.

Finally, students had the chance to eat and network with other students, faculty and staff.
