Highlights from the 43rd Annual Graduate & Professional Student Orientation & Networking Reception

For more than 350 graduate students, faculty and staff, the 43rd Annual Graduate/Professional Student Orientation on August 28, 2014 offered a chance for both new and returning underrepresented graduate and professional students to network with students from other academic disciplines at Ohio State. The graduate students represented nearly half of the over 100 graduate programs and all six of Ohio State’s professional colleges across multiple specializations. It was also a chance for the administration, faculty, staff, alumni, and community to come together to welcome students into The Ohio State University family.

A tradition in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Ohio State University for over four decades, historically the GPS Orientation is the university’s largest of its kind and is held annually on the first Thursday of autumn semester. This year’s program included Justice Yvette McGee Brown as the keynote speaker. A first-generation college graduate, Justice McGee Brown was the first African-American woman elected to the Franklin County Common Pleas Court, and in January 2011, she became the first African-American woman to serve as a justice on the state's highest court. Justice McGee Brown received her juris doctorate in 1985 from Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law.  She is currently a partner at the Jones Day, a law firm which advises leading corporations in Ohio and throughout the world to help solve the complex and ever-changing legal challenges facing the business community.

New this year, students also had the chance to network and develop relationships with eleven corporate representatives who were present at the orientation. Some of the businesses and other organizations present included Key Bank, TEKsystems and Teach for America.
