2019 Black Male Retreat

Nearly 100 Black male college students journeyed to Deer Creek State Park and Lodge Center on March 22-24, 2019, to participate in the 14th Annual National Black Male Retreat. The retreat promotes self-awareness, unity, academic motivation, leadership, and manhood among a concentrated group of Black males. The focus of this year's retreat was “Enhancing Holistic Wellness,” which concentrated on the following dimensions of wellness: emotional, brotherhood awareness, career, social, creative, physical, financial, intellectual, and life after graduation. Presentations included “Supporting Black Male Excellence in Higher Education and Beyond”; “Leveraging Your Graduation School Application”; “Personal Finance 101”; and “Racial Battle Fatigue.”

Started in 2005, the retreat was intended to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to share and discuss their experiences at The Ohio State University. Since then, retreats have shifted to focusing on redefining manhood and developing financial literacy.

The retreat's featured speakers were Kevin Cokley, PhD, who holds the Oscar and Anne Mauzy Regents Professorship for Educational Research and Development in the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin; James L. Moore III, PhD, vice provost for Diversity and Inclusion and chief diversity officer at The Ohio State University and executive director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and the inaugural Distinguished Professor of Urban Education in the College of Education and Human Ecology; Carolyn Morales, the Director of Diversity and Recruitment initiatives within The Graduate School; and William A. Smith, PhD, professor and department chair in the department of Education, Culture & Society at the University of Utah.
