Off the Lake Productions presents: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Off the Lake Productions (OTL) is a student-run, non-profit theatre organization at The Ohio State University. They produce three plays a year: fall cabaret, winter musical, and spring play. Every role in these productions is filled by student members, making this organization uniquely impressive. Their continued efforts to put on productions evoke a multitude of emotions in their audience every time the stage is set. Off the Lake Productions is also dedicated to giving back to the local community. Admission to every show is just one dollar or a canned good, all of which are donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is their 22nd annual winter musical.

Producing a play involves the moving parts of many teams, crews, and individuals and is so much more than the extraordinary talent of the cast. The production team is responsible for directing, choreography, music, and stage design of the play. This year's Off the Lake production team consists of eight positions that collaborate to bring these elements to life: director, stage manager, pit conductor, music director, choreographer, artistic director, tech director, and assistant director.

The run crew is responsible for the supervision and operations, or “run,” during the play, such as management of the stage, lighting, sound, and costumes/props. The run crew is managed by the directors on the production team, which speaks to the importance of overlap and collaboration when it comes to theatrical productions. Off the Lake's run crew this year is made up of 19 members who work together both on and off stage to keep the show going.

The pit orchestra is responsible for setting the tone of the scene through the careful synchronization of musicians and actors. The conductor must know the arrangements and be aware of starts and stops in the play by paying attention to detail and constant observation of the actor or actress on stage. The size and composition of a pit orchestra can range depending on the needs and type of play but typically involve strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Off the Lake's pit orchestra is composed of the conductor and music director along with 10 musicians, all dedicated to demonstrating stellar musical talent.

A theatrical production would not be complete without the talented actors and actresses telling the story of the play. Choosing who to cast and for what part is a very important element of a play because they are physically and emotionally conveying the plot of the play and act as the face of the production. Each Off the Lake actor or actress must audition in front of the director, music director, and choreographer.

In the theatre, no role of any team or individual is more important than the other. Everyone involved plays an integral role in the production of the play and recognizes that the final product could not be achieved without the contributions of each team. Constant collaboration and participation is what continues to make Off the Lake Productions' performances so popular on and off campus.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a French novel written by Victor Hugo and was published in 1831. Set in the late 1400's in Paris, the story follows a young man named Quasimodo who was born with a deformity and was deemed a hideous monster. Forbidden to go outside by his “master,” Archdeacon Claude Frollo, Quasimodo's only friends are a group of gargoyles who eventually convince him to go out into the world.

Filled with themes of lust, damnation, and revenge, The Hunchback of Notre Damedelivers a feeling of redemption for the three who remained true to themselves and stood up for the right thing. The hard work and dedication of the members of Off the Lake made this show possible for hundreds of people to experience the emotions of this journey in 1400s Paris. “This rollercoaster of emotions will leave you speechless, breathless, and wanting to come back again,” writes Chloe Hanenkrat, director. The Ohio State University is proud to support Off the Lake Productions in their pursuit of all walks of the arts and is eager for more in the coming years.
