MASS --Mentee Award for Scholarly Success:

  • Jordan Loewen, for successful completion of the LASER Mentor program and entrance to graduate school at Princeton University

GALAS awards--the Graduate Achievement for Latino/a Studies Awards:

  • First Place:  Veronica Betancourt’s research paper, “Brillan por su ausencia: Latinos as the missing outsiders of mainstream art museums.
  • Two for the Second Place GALaS awards:
    Alexis Del Sol’s "Whitewashed Dance: Bringing Color to the Here and Now"
    Leticia Wiggins's "Boundary Sound: Border Radio"

 ABUELo/aS --Award for Best Undergraduate Essay in Latino/a Studies Award:

  • First Place: Judy Rodriguez's "Queering la jibara: A Counter-Narrative to Puerto Rican Nationalist Discourse."
  • Two runners-up: 
    Yurancy Quiñones' "MTV's Contribution to Teenage Pregnancy and Motherhood" written for Theresa Rojas 
    Miguel Guevara's "Institutionalized Silencing." Written for Prof. Delgadillo


Give to L.A.S.E.R.

L.A.S.E.R./Latino & Latin American Space for Enrichment and Research

L.A.S.E.R. is an initiative under the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to foster the growing of scholars of the Latino Americas. Our faculty, students, and affiliate staff work together to create a learning forum for increasing our understanding of Latino and Latin American history, culture, education, economics, geography, nutrition, and other areas.

L.A.S.E.R. space at 2174 Smith Labs serves to bring together faculty, students, and staff as well as to exhibit the work of Latino and Latin American artists.

L.A.S.E.R. space at 2192 Smith Labs serves as the office for L.A.S.E.R. Graduate Mentors to meet with undergraduates at all levels who are working in all areas of Latino and Latin American studies. The L.A.S.E.R. Mentors serve to enrich the undergraduate research experience at OSU and to professionalize students for successful application to advanced professional and graduate school programs.

  • Getting Ready. L.A.S.E.R. Mentors direct freshmen and sophomores to research opportunities in the Latino Americas and to appropriate faculty and classes as well as academically coach the students in these first years.
  • Getting Connected: L.A.S.E.R. Mentors continue to guide and coach juniors and seniors in their research and work with professionalizing their writing.
  • Getting to the Finish Line: L.A.S.E.R. Mentors help seniors prepare applications for graduate and professional school, working on timelines, writing samples, statements of purpose, and gathering of letters of recommendation.

L.A.S.E.R. celebrates he accomplishments of graduate and undergraduate student research and achievement with its yearly awards: GALaS—Graduate Achievement for Latino/a Studies; ABUELo/aS—Award for Best Undergraduate Essay in Latino/a Studies Award; MASS - Mentee Award for Scholarly Success
